Poetry
Donal is a poet. He  has been broadcast on RTE Lyric FM's Quiet Quarter and, in 2006, won the Start Poetry Prize for Irish poets.

Judge Mark Roper commented "These are ambitious poems which take risks with language...I liked the way the poems focus strongly on object...and I liked the complicated way they go about their business...Above all, it is the poet's striking use of language which singles this collection out."

Fiction and prose
Between 2006 and 2007, Donal wrote the novel Quaff. Conceived as the first part of a trilogy, it tells the story of the discovery of a magical island locked in the Arctic Circle and the great quest this discovery sets in motion. Prose pieces include Black Light, a collection of aphorisms and the short story A Detective in Ancient Ireland.

Screenwriting
Donal's feature-length screenplay 'Family Film' was shortlisted for the inaugural 2008 Jameson Film Festival 'Write Here, Write Now' competition. Judges described it as a 'hilarious morality fable...that scatters poisoned pellets over a large cross-section of Celtic Tiger Dubliners'.  The PDF of the script can be downloaded here.
